Teaching Moments in the Kitchen

I recently had a teaching moment by my "baby" in our kitchen. Yes, you read that right. I was taught a lesson by someone that cannot even speak a single word. Not something this mother of an 8-month old was expecting quite yet, but then I don't think he even realized he was teaching me something.

Here's the inside scoop.

When it's time for CB to eat, we will sit him down in his high-chair, and before we can even get his bib on, he starts crying to show his frustration that he's not getting his food yet. I was going to post a video or picture of this, but out of respect for my son, I decided against it - so you'll have to use your imagination.

Imagine there's a high chair. A crying baby. And Hubby, sitting over him with his bib in hand wondering if the the high-chair is his cue to start crying because he knows what's coming and yet doesn't know why the food isn't already in his mouth.

[Side Note: We've learned our lesson and now make sure that the food is ready before sitting him in his chair. Not a fun lesson to learn while you have a sad little kid crying giving you looks like you have abandoned him.]

Anyway, while CB had big alligator tears rolling down his cheeks and Hubby continued to put on his bib, I overheard Hubby say to him,

"Has there ever been a time when we haven't fed you? Do you think we've abandoned you? You'd think after every day sitting down with you in this chair, you'd realize that we're going to take care of you. We love you."

And that's when it hit me.

How many times have I cried in anguish over the feeling that Jesus wasn't helping me or giving me what I wanted - and in reality, if I would have just calmed down and taken a step back, I would have seen that He is taking care of me. In fact, He's taking care of me better than I could have planned or done myself.

It's so easy for me to want to control my own circumstances. Yet, my control limits what God can do with my life and truly doesn't show my trust in Him.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? - Matthew 6:26

What an eye opener! To think that all we need to do is trust in God. Easier said than done, I know! But the payoff - one happy kid.
